Truth of Today

Cancer and Mountains

On March 1, 2022, I received a phone call that my biopsy came back and I have breast cancer. It was about a six-minute phone call.

Little victories: on March 3, I learned I was not triple negative and had HER2-positive cancer. HER2-positive breast cancer is a breast cancer that tests positive for a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). This protein promotes the growth of cancer cells.

In about 1 of every 5 breast cancers, the cancer cells have extra copies of the gene that  makes the HER2 protein. HER2-positive breast cancers tend to be more aggressive than other types of breast cancer. Treatments that specifically target HER2 are very effective. (Read more on HER2 cancers from the Mayo Clinic at https://www.mayoclinic.org/breast-cancer/expert-answers/faq-20058066).

On March 4, an MRI showed that the cancer has not yet spread to my lymph nodes or left breast.

On March 21, I will harvest my eggs. On March 23, I begin chemo.

This is the trail. Nothing to do now but figure out how to walk or crawl it.
